The Dendrobates tinctorius Brazilian are a subspecies of Dendrobates tinctorius marked by their yellow colouring. They are easy to keep, making them suitable for anyone wanting to start keeping this family of amphibians (Dendrobatidae). They are a semi-arboreal species that benefits from a small pool to soak in. Although they are poisonous in the wild, in captivity, due to differences in diet, they show no toxicity.
Although this is a relatively easy species to keep, you should pay attention to a few aspects and ensure certain conditions, which you will find in the following paragraphs.
Size: A 45x45x60cm terrarium is recommended for 2-3 adults
Material: Glass
During the day, a temperature between 24ºC and 28ºC should be maintained. At night, the temperature can drop to 22ºC. The easiest and most practical way to achieve these temperatures is with a Heat Mat placed externally on one side of the terrarium. Like any heat source, the Heat Mat should be properly regulated by a thermostat.
The Dendrobates do not need UVB. However, they benefit from exposure to low levels (using a ShadeDweller lamp)
Water should always be available as a small pool/pond where the frogs can soak. This species requires a relative humidity of at least 60%, ideally around 80%-100%.
Dendrobates tinctorius Brazilian feel comfortable among vegetation and leaf litter. Equip the terrarium with plenty of hides and different levels to make the best possible use of the space. This is a very active species that likes to explore the whole terrarium in search of food. You can use branches, cork bark, stones and plants (artificial or live).
Feeding habits: Insectivorous
Diet: They should be fed every day.
Insects: The staple diet should be Fruit Flies. The terrarium should be colonised with springtails and isopods, which will also often serve as food. You can vary the diet with Micro Crickets, Buffalo Worms and small Waxworms.
For vitamin and mineral supplementation, dust 2 meals a week with Calcium Powder and one with a quality Multivitamin Complex (with Vit. D3).
