Size: Adults can reach around 10 cm
Origin: China
Lifespan: Up to 10 years in captivity
Natural Habitat: They inhabit lakes and small, cold, still bodies of water
Once one of the most popular and abundant newt species in the hobby, it is now quite rare. It is very simple to keep and very attractive, with an entirely black back and a red and black belly.
Although this is a relatively easy species to keep, you should pay attention to a few aspects and ensure certain conditions, which you will find in the following paragraphs.
Size: An aquarium of at least 50 litres is recommended for a trio.
Material: Glass
The Tritão Ventre de Fogo needs low temperatures. The water temperature should be between 14ºC and 20ºC. Temperatures above 24ºC must be avoided at all costs. It is active both day and night but has no special lighting needs.
The Tritão Ventre de Fogo is sensitive to water quality, so this must be maintained. Filters can be used as long as they produce little current in the aquarium.
The aquarium can be decorated with logs, stones and plants (live or artificial) that provide hiding places and shelter from the light.
Although it is an aquatic species, a dry platform where they can leave the water is recommended.
Feeding habits: Insectivorous
Diet: They should be fed 2 to 3 times a week.
Foods: A varied diet based on earthworms, bloodworms, brine shrimp and tubifex should be offered.
