CARE GUIDE

Size: Adults can reach 100-140cm

Origin: Northern Australia and New Guinea

Lifespan: Up to 30 years in captivity

Natural Habitat: It inhabits rocky outcrops, grasslands, dry forests and semi-arid areas of northern Australia

The Spotted Python (Antaresia maculosa) is the largest species in the genus Antaresia, characterised by its distinctive pattern of irregular chocolate-to-purple blotches on a cream to yellowish-brown background. These small pythons are known for their docile nature and ease of care, making them an excellent choice for both beginners and experienced keepers. Their calm temperament and manageable size make this species an excellent option among pythons.

Although this is a relatively easy species to keep, you should pay attention to a few aspects and ensure certain conditions, described in the following paragraphs, to guarantee the health and wellbeing of these magnificent animals.

Terrarium

Size: A minimum terrarium of 90x60x60cm is recommended for 1 adult

Material: Glass or Wood

- Heating and Lighting

You should set up a terrarium with a thermal gradient, with a minimum temperature of 22-26ºC on the cool side and around 28-32ºC on the warm side. At night, the temperature should not drop below 21ºC. To achieve these temperatures, heat mats or heat cables controlled by a quality thermostat are recommended, as these are mainly terrestrial snakes.

As a mainly nocturnal species, the Spotted Python does not require UVB. However, it benefits from exposure to natural light/dark cycles to maintain healthy circadian rhythms. LED lighting can be used for viewing during the day.

- Humidity

The Spotted Python requires moderate humidity levels, between 50% and 70%. This species is quite tolerant of humidity variations, reflecting the diversity of habitats it occupies in the wild. It is important to monitor humidity with a digital hygrometer and adjust it by strategically placing the water bowl or lightly misting when necessary.

During shedding, it helps to slightly increase humidity to ease the process, always ensuring good ventilation to prevent respiratory problems.

- Decor

The terrarium should mimic this species' natural rocky environment. Aspen shavings, coco fibre or paper are recommended as substrate for easy cleaning. Equip the terrarium with multiple hides on both thermal sides, rocks for thermoregulation and some low logs or branches for environmental enrichment, as juveniles can show semi-arboreal behaviour.

It is essential that hides are small enough for the snake to feel secure, as this species prefers tight, enclosed spaces.

Diet and Supplementation

Feeding habits: Carnivorous

Diet: In the wild, they feed on small mammals, birds, reptiles and even bats. In captivity, they should be fed exclusively on rodents of an appropriate size. Juveniles should be fed weekly, while adults can be fed every 7-10 days.

- Foods

Prey: Newborn mice for juveniles, progressing to small to medium adult mice for adults. Prey size should not exceed the widest part of the snake's body.

- Supplementation

As the diet is based exclusively on whole rodents, no additional supplementation is needed, since prey provide all essential nutrients. It is important to always offer fresh water in a container large enough for the snake to submerge if needed, especially during shedding.
