Phyllium giganteum, commonly known as the Inseto Folha Gigante, is one of the largest leaf insect species in the world. Its name comes from the Greek "phyllium" (leaf) and the Latin "giganteum" (giant). The species is widely recognised for its incredible mimicry, perfectly resembling a leaf, including leaf veins and edges that look dry or decaying.
This fascinating species reproduces mainly by parthenogenesis (reproduction without fertilisation), with males being extremely rare both in the wild and in captivity. Its unique appearance, interesting behaviour and relatively simple care make it a popular choice among exotic insect enthusiasts. However, you should pay attention to a few aspects and ensure certain conditions, which you will find in the following paragraphs.
Size: A minimum terrarium of 40x30x60cm is recommended for 1-2 adults
Material: Glass with a mesh top or side for adequate ventilation
The ideal temperature for this species is 25°C to 29°C during the day, dropping to 18-21°C at night. They generally do not need special lighting, but a gentle heat source can help maintain the right temperature, especially in colder months.
This species does not need UVB, as it is mainly nocturnal and, in the wild, lives sheltered under the forest canopy.
The Inseto Folha Gigante needs fairly high humidity, 70-80% for nymphs and 60-70% for adults. Mist the terrarium daily or every other day, depending on ventilation. However, it is crucial to avoid excess humidity, which can lead to mould and respiratory problems. Good ventilation is essential to keep the right balance.
Newly hatched nymphs are especially prone to drowning in large water droplets, so misting should be aimed mainly at the plants and terrarium walls.
The terrarium should have branches or live/artificial plants providing vertical surfaces for the insects to climb and moult on. The bottom can be covered with damp paper towels, coco fibre or a similar moisture-retaining substrate.
It is essential that the terrarium is tall enough (at least 3-4 times the insect's length) for them to moult properly while hanging freely.
Feeding habits: Phytophagous
Diet: The Inseto Folha Gigante feeds exclusively on leaves. Food should be available at all times, replacing the plants as soon as they start to wilt.
Plants: Bramble (Rubus spp.), oak (Quercus spp.) and rose (Rosa spp.) leaves. For nymphs, cut the edges of the leaves to make feeding easier.
Note that young, tender leaves should be avoided, especially bramble. Older, darker leaves are better for this species. It is also advisable to avoid changing the type of food while the nymphs are developing.
No additional supplementation is needed for this species, as long as a varied and suitable diet is provided.
