CARE GUIDE

Size: Adults can reach 17 cm in length

Origin: China, Taiwan and Japan

Lifespan: Up to 40 years

Natural Habitat: They mainly inhabit dense mountain forests, lowland meadows and aquatic systems such as rice paddies, streams and rivers.

The Tartaruga de Caixa Chinesa is a semi-aquatic turtle species of intermediate size with a distinctive appearance, making it highly sought after.

Although this is a relatively easy species to keep, you should pay attention to a few aspects and ensure certain conditions, which you will find in the following paragraphs.

Aquarium

Size: Minimum 100x100x30cm for 2-3 adults

Material: Glass

 - Heating and Lighting

A basking area at 28-32ºC should be provided. A 5-7% UVB lamp should also be used to provide the right levels of ultraviolet radiation for this turtle species. Water temperature should be kept between 24-26ºC with a submersible aquarium heater.

- Filtration

A filter is needed to keep the water clean, as these animals produce a lot of waste. Use a filter with a low flow rate or one that can be adjusted, as this species prefers calm water.

- Decor

The Tartaruga de Caixa Chinesa benefits from being kept in more aquatic habitats as a juvenile, with shallow water and plenty of hides. Adults prefer semi-aquatic habitats with large land areas, vegetation and hides, plus a water area where they can submerge.

Diet and Supplementation

Feeding habits: Mainly Carnivorous

- Foods

Staple: The staple diet should be a commercial food formulated specifically for turtles.

Occasional: Earthworms, Freshwater Fish, Crickets, Roaches, Snails, Mealworms, Waxworms, Calcium Worms, White Meat (Chicken or Turkey)...
