The Bombina orientalis are one of the easiest amphibian species to keep in captivity. Their red and black belly, together with their diurnal habits, make them captivating for any amphibian lover. With a voracious appetite and a fearless attitude, they are a popular choice for aquaterrariums. They are terrestrial, diurnal and semi-aquatic, and benefit from a large area of water to submerge in.
Although this is a relatively easy species to keep, you should pay attention to a few aspects and ensure certain conditions, which you will find in the following paragraphs.
Size: A 60x45x45cm terrarium is recommended for up to 5 adults
Material: Glass
The Sapo Ventre de Fogo can tolerate quite a wide temperature range. Ideally, during the day, the terrarium should be between 20 and 26ºC. Temperatures above 28ºC should be avoided. At night the temperature can drop to 16ºC. This means that, in most cases, no heat source is needed. In extreme cases, a heater can be used in the water section of the terrarium.
The Sapo Ventre de Fogo does not need UVB. However, it benefits from exposure to low levels (using a ShadeDweller lamp)
Water should always be available and ideally take up at least 40% of the terrarium. The ideal water depth is 5-6cm. The water should be changed frequently, as this species dirties it quite a lot.
The Sapo Ventre de Fogo is semi-aquatic, so special attention should be paid to the water section of the terrarium. It should be decorated with logs and stones that provide hiding places and support for the animals.
The land section can also be decorated with rocks, moss and logs, along with some plants (artificial or live) and hides.
Feeding habits: Insectivorous
Diet: They should be fed daily as juveniles and every other day as adults.
Insects: Young animals can be fed fruit flies and small crickets. Adults eat anything that fits in their mouth. A varied diet based on crickets, earthworms, roaches, waxworms and mealworms should be offered.
For vitamin and mineral supplementation, dust 2 meals a week with Calcium Powder and one with a quality Multivitamin Complex (with Vit. D3).
