Size: Adults can reach 2 cm
Origin: Central America
Lifespan: Up to 10 years in captivity
Natural Habitat: They inhabit densely vegetated tropical forests near water sources in Central America
The Rã de Vidro is one of the most unusual amphibian species. Its transparent belly reveals its internal organs, and you can even see its heart beating. It is a shy, nocturnal species that needs a well-planted terrarium.
It is better suited to people who already have some experience with other arboreal/small amphibian species.
Size: A 45x45x60cm terrarium is recommended for 2-3 adults (only 1 male per terrarium)
Material: Glass
A stable temperature between 22ºC and 26ºC should be maintained both day and night. The easiest and most practical way to achieve this is with a Heat Mat placed externally on one side of the terrarium. Like any heat source, the Heat Mat should be properly regulated by a thermostat.
The Rã de Vidro does not need UVB. However, it benefits from exposure to low levels (using a ShadeDweller Arboreal lamp)
Water should always be available as a small pool/pond where the frogs can soak. This species requires a relative humidity of at least 60%, ideally around 80%.
The Rã de Vidro is a shy species that feels comfortable among foliage. Equip the terrarium with plenty of vertical structure so they can occupy the highest parts. You can use branches, cork bark, stones and plants (artificial or live). Young animals should not be kept in overly large terrariums, to make feeding easier.
Feeding habits: Insectivorous
Diet: They should be fed every night with live insects.
Insects: The staple diet should be Fruit Flies, but it is useful to vary with Micro Crickets and other "micro" foods
For vitamin and mineral supplementation, dust 2 meals a week with Calcium Powder and one with a quality Multivitamin Complex (with Vit. D3).
