CARE GUIDE

Size: Adults can reach 3 cm

Origin: South America

Lifespan: Up to 10 years in captivity

Natural Habitat: They inhabit the forest floor of South American rainforests

The Epipedobates anthonyi stand out as one of the most common Epipedobates species in captivity. Like most dendrobatids, they are notable for how easy they are to keep, making them a recommended choice for anyone wanting to start out in the fascinating world of amphibians. These small frogs are terrestrial and benefit from a small pool to soak in. Although poisonous in the wild, in captivity, due to differences in diet, they show no toxicity.

Although this is a relatively easy species to keep, you should pay attention to a few aspects and ensure certain conditions, which you will find in the following paragraphs.

Terrarium

Size: A 45x45x45cm terrarium is recommended for 2-3 adults

Material: Glass

 - Heating and Lighting

During the day, a temperature between 24ºC and 28ºC should be maintained. At night, the temperature can drop to 22ºC. The easiest and most practical way to achieve these temperatures is with a Heat Mat placed externally on one side of the terrarium. Like any heat source, the Heat Mat should be properly regulated by a thermostat.

The Epipedobates do not need UVB. However, they benefit from exposure to low levels (using a ShadeDweller lamp)

- Humidity

Water should always be available as a small pool/pond where the frogs can soak. This species requires a relative humidity of at least 60%, ideally around 80%-100%.

- Decor

The Epipedobates anthonyi feel comfortable among leaf litter. Equip the terrarium with plenty of hides and different levels to make the best possible use of the space. This is a very active species that likes to explore the whole terrarium in search of food. You can use branches, cork bark, stones and plants (artificial or live).

Diet and Supplementation

Feeding habits: Insectivorous

Diet: They should be fed every day.

- Foods

Insects: The staple diet should be Fruit Flies. The terrarium should be colonised with springtails and isopods, which will also often serve as food. You can vary the diet with Micro Crickets, Buffalo Worms and small Waxworms.

- Supplementation

For vitamin and mineral supplementation, dust 2 meals a week with Calcium Powder and one with a quality Multivitamin Complex (with Vit. D3).
