Red Runners (Shelfordella lateralis) are a fast-moving species of cockroach, orange-brown in color. Their frantic movement attracts the attention of all animals. However, only the fastest and most agile can catch them. Nutritionally, they are very similar to crickets and are an excellent alternative to them, as they release fewer odors, are easier to keep and live longer.
They are used to feed various species of birds, fish, reptiles , amphibians, arthropods and small, medium and large mammals.
Nutritional information
They are considered to be a healthy and well-balanced live food, with a relatively low percentage of fat (approx. 20%) and a protein content of approximately 45%.
If you want to increase their nutritional value before feeding them to your pet, you can carry out gut loading by feeding the cockroaches with Repashy SuperLoad the day before and then sprinkling them with Nutri-Cal immediately before feeding them to your pet.
Conservation
Red Runners cockroaches are relatively easy to keep. We advise you to have a mini habitat, where they have space and hiding places. Our Braplast Perforated Boxes are perfect for this purpose. However, any box with adequate ventilation will do. You can put a layer of coconut humus in the bottom of the box to create a slightly damp environment, which these cockroaches prefer, and it should provide the cockroaches with hiding places (egg cartons are often used, which, due to their shape and large surface area, provide the ideal hiding place for cockroaches). You should keep them at a temperature between 15ºC and 30ºC. As far as feeding is concerned, you can feed them Komodo's Beastie Feast and Komodo's Beastie Drink so that they get the water they need.
