Size: Adults can reach 40cm, including the tail
Origin: Kenya and Tanzania
Lifespan: Up to 10 years
Natural Habitat: Mountain forest areas of Kenya and Tanzania
Like most chameleons, the Camaleão de Jackson is an arboreal species. It inhabits wooded areas at moderate altitude in Kenya and Tanzania. It is one of the most fascinating and recognisable chameleon species kept in captivity, thanks to its three horns – one on the snout and two above the eyes – used in territorial disputes.
Although this is a species of intermediate difficulty, keeping it in captivity is perfectly achievable by following some basic care guidelines, described in the following paragraphs.
Size: At least a 90x45x60cm terrarium for 1 adult
Material: Glass (with mesh top/good airflow) or Mesh
During the day, an ambient temperature of around 22ºC should be maintained, with a Basking Spot of around 30ºC. At night the temperature should drop to around 16-18ºC. To achieve these temperatures, a Halogen Lamp is needed to create the Basking Spot. Room temperature is usually sufficient for the rest of the terrarium.
Regarding ultraviolet radiation, it is essential that during the day they are exposed to a UVI between 3 and 4 (Ferguson Zone 3). To achieve these UV Index levels, 6 to 12% tubular UV lamps can be used depending on the height of the terrarium.
This species requires relatively low daytime relative humidity. At night, humidity should be increased by misting the terrarium.
These chameleons feel comfortable among foliage. The terrarium should be furnished with plenty of vertical structure so they can occupy its upper areas. Branches, cork bark, stones and plants (artificial or live) can be used. Young animals should not be kept in excessively large terrariums.
Feeding habits: Insectivorous
Diet: They should be fed live insects daily.
Insects: Locusts, Crickets, Roaches, Calcium Worms...
For vitamin and mineral supplementation, alternate a meal dusted with Calcium Powder with one dusted with a good-quality Multivitamin Complex (with Vit. D3).
