The Gecko Chahoua (Mniarogekko chahoua), also known as the mossy prehensile-tailed gecko, is an arboreal species native to the tropical forests of New Caledonia. It is characterised by its unique camouflaged appearance resembling moss or lichen, with green, brown, pink and white patterns. It has a muscular prehensile tail and adhesive toe pads that aid its arboreal life. These nocturnal animals have a docile temperament and are relatively easy to keep, making them suitable for beginners and experienced breeders alike.
Although this is a relatively easy species to keep, a few aspects require attention and certain conditions, described in the following paragraphs, must be ensured to guarantee the health and wellbeing of these fascinating geckos.
Size: A 45x45x60cm terrarium is recommended for 1 adult (prioritise height)
Material: Glass (with mesh top for adequate ventilation)
During the day, a temperature between 22ºC and 26ºC should be maintained. At night it can drop to 20ºC. As a subtropical species, extra heating is rarely needed except in winter. If necessary, a gentle heat source can be placed at one end of the terrarium to create a slight thermal gradient.
Gecko Chahoua are crepuscular/nocturnal and can technically survive without UVB, but benefit significantly from exposure to low levels (Ferguson Zone 2). 5-7% UVB lamps are recommended to promote vitamin D3 synthesis and strengthen the immune system.
Gecko Chahoua need high humidity, reflecting their natural rainforest habitat. Relative humidity should be kept between 60% and 80%. To achieve this, mist the terrarium 1-2 times a day (usually in the evening and, if needed, in the morning). It is important to let the terrarium partially dry between mistings to avoid fungal problems.
A water bowl with clean, fresh water should always be available on a raised platform. The geckos will also drink water droplets from leaves and terrarium walls after misting, which is natural behaviour.
As an arboreal species, the terrarium should prioritise vertical climbing structures. Furnish it with plenty of vegetation and climbing elements such as cork bark (especially cork tubes, which they love), vertical logs, vines and plants (artificial or live). Live plants such as pothos, bromeliads and dracaenas not only provide places to climb and hide but also help maintain the high humidity required.
For substrate, a mix that retains some moisture is recommended, such as coco fibre, sphagnum moss or a bioactive substrate. A layer of leaf litter can be added on top to simulate the natural environment and help with humidity. The substrate should be at least 5cm deep to cushion any falls from perches.
Feeding habits: Omnivorous (Frugivorous/Insectivorous)
Juvenile Diet (0-12 months): Commercial diet daily, insects 1-2 times a week
Adult Diet: Commercial diet every 2-3 days, insects once a week
Insects: Roaches, Crickets, Locusts, Mealworms, Waxworms, Calcium Worms
Fruit (occasionally as a treat): Mashed banana, mango, papaya
Regarding vitamin and mineral supplementation, quality commercial diets already include a balanced mix of all essential nutrients. When offering insects, dust them with a calcium supplement without D3 (as commercial diets already contain vitamin D3). Adequate UVB exposure complements supplementation by promoting natural vitamin D3 synthesis.
