A Ultraviolet Radiation (UV Radiation) is extremely important for the majority of reptiles and amphibians, and is obtained in nature through direct sun exposure. In captivity, it is essential to provide this radiation artificially (using UV lamps), to ensure a long and healthy life for your pet.
Ultraviolet radiation can be divided into 3 spectra:
UVA - Stimulates normal behaviour and helps regulate feeding, behaviour and reproductive mechanisms;
UVB - Essential in the process of vitamin D3 synthesis, which in turn aids the absorption of dietary calcium;
UVC - Radiation used as an antibacterial method that, in large quantities, can be harmful to most living beings.
The Ultraviolet lamps marketed for reptiles and amphibians only emit radiation in the UVA and UVB spectrum.
It is also important to note that ultraviolet radiation is filtered by materials such as glass and plastic, so direct exposure (without barriers) is always necessary for your animal to benefit from it.
