Ultravioletradiation (UV radiation) is extremely important for most reptiles and amphibians and is obtained in the wild through direct exposure to the sun. In captivity, it is essential to provide this radiation artificially (using UV lamps) in order to guarantee your pet a long and healthy life.
Ultraviolet radiation can be divided into 3 spectra:
UVA - Stimulates normal behaviors and helps regulate feeding, behavior and reproductive mechanisms;
UVB - Essential in the process of synthesizing Vitamin D3, which in turn helps in the absorption of dietary calcium;
UVC - Radiation used as an antibacterial method which, in large quantities, can be harmful to most living beings.
Ultraviolet lamps marketed for reptiles and amphibians only emit radiation from the UVA and UVB spectrum.
It is also important to note that ultraviolet radiation is filtered out by materials such as glass and plastic, so direct exposure (without barriers) is always necessary for your animal to benefit from it.
